In his research on developing a vaccinine from scratch, Matthew Higgiins is making use of AlphaFold to understand how proteins fit together and predict their structures based on the data available at the time. This will allow him to design new protein substances with better properties than those already in existence. According to Higgiins, “If we can design proteins and then use AlphaFold to detect signs of disease before bones start breaking, it would be incredibly powerful.”
